Formation of the Fulton J. Sheen Center in the School of Philosophy

With the approval of the president, the Very Rev. David O'Connell, and the provost, James Brennan, Ph.D., the School of Philosophy is pleased to announce that the Fulton J. Sheen Center is being formed within the school for the advancement of teaching and learning excellence in philosophy.

The Fulton J. Sheen Center will house current and expanded programs of the School of Philosophy for the formation of its doctoral students who serve as graduate instructors within the university. Its director is the Rev. Kurt Pritzl, O.P., Ph.D., dean of the school, and its program director is Sister Marian Brady, S. P., Ph.D. When it is fully established, the Sheen Center will also offer lectures, conferences and other programs in the teaching and learning of philosophy. The center will also support graduate students and junior faculty members of the School of Philosophy in their development as scholar-teachers.

The Fulton J. Sheen Center is named for Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, a great teacher and innovativor who became a well-known radio and television personality. He taught in the School of Philosophy for almost 25 years, from 1926 until 1950. The School of Philosophy continues the tradition of classical and Thomistic philosophical learning that was the basis for Archbishop Sheen's prodigious accomplishments and unsurpassed success as a teacher, writer and broadcaster.

The full establishment of the Fulton J. Sheen Center within the School of Philosophy is a special project of the Board of Advisors, the development and advancement committee of the School of Philosophy, comprised of 18 distinguished business leaders and professionals.
